Advice for future students

Federico encourages prospective students to engage with alumni to understand the programme's strengths and weaknesses. He emphasizes that the program provides a solid foundation and diverse opportunities, making graduates confident in their abilities.

"Talk as much as possible with students who have gone through the programme to understand its real strengths and weaknesses."

Federico believes that students with an affinity for quantitative subjects should consider MSc Economics, as it offers a solid foundation and various career paths, not just a PhD. "It doesn’t mean you need prior experience (for example, I studied Economics and Management). Also, don’t limit yourself to thinking that this programme automatically leads to a PhD. That is just one of many possible paths."

New dimensions of the learning experience

Federico's academic journey in Gothenburg was marked by enriching and challenging courses that broadened his perspective and honed his skills. He found the course structure to be quite different from those in Italy, which added a new dimension to his learning experience.

Public and Behavioral Economics stood out for its ability to stimulate critical thinking and build connections between complex economic topics. The Economics Research Process course was incredibly useful for approaching his thesis with greater awareness, allowing him to formulate and develop his own research proposal with valuable feedback. Despite his prior knowledge, Applied Econometrics pushed him to tackle challenging assignments and master Stata18, which proved invaluable for his thesis.

Federico also greatly appreciated the opportunity to present his work in front of his colleagues. "Public speaking in English is something I worked on during those occasions," he says, highlighting the importance of these experiences in building his confidence and communication skills.

He valued the development of analytical and critical thinking skills throughout the program. Federico also appreciated how the programme brings students closer to becoming PhD candidates, even though he hasn't taken that path yet. The ability to use different types of data, such as cross-sectional, panel, and spatial data, was another significant benefit of the program.

Choosing Economics and the Double Degree Programme

During his undergraduate studies, Federico spent six months in Madrid, which made him realize the importance of continuing his studies in English. Additionally, he discovered a deeper passion for subjects like Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Financial Mathematics, and Economic Policy. Combining these factors, he found the Master’s at the University of Rome Tor Vergata to be an ambitious path. The program admitted a small number of students (about 20) and offered a broad range of learning opportunities beyond academic courses. One of these was the chance to spend the second year of the MSc programme either in Konstanz, Germany, or Gothenburg, Sweden.

"What started as a distant ambition became a reality, thanks to my academic performance during the first semester of the first year. I immediately accepted the opportunity to go to Gothenburg, as earning a Double Degree would not only enrich my educational background, but also allow me to live in a country I had always admired—Sweden."

Federico's thought process was clear: "When in 2024, after finishing my Master's, I look back, would I prefer to have diversified my academic experience, or to have spent two years in Rome? The answer was clear - the former!"

With a double degree in Economics and Finance, Federico Bruschi's journey from Italy to Sweden has been marked by enriching academic experiences and significant personal growth. His studies at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and the School provided him with a solid foundation for his professional career. "Earning a double degree not only enriched my educational background, but also allowed me to live in a country I had always admired - Sweden," he reflects. Today, Federico uses his skills as a data analyst at Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.
